Alpha Sigma Tau was founded by eight founding members: Helene M. Rice, May Gephart, Mayene Tracy, Mable Chase, Harriet Marx, Eva O'Keefe, Adriance Rice, and Ruth Dutcher on November 4, 1899 in Ypsilanti, Michigan. It's purpose was to promote ethical, cultural, and social development of its members and still holds true today. In the beginning years of the sorority it strived to establish a foundation in order for it to become a national organization that it is today.
Tau Honor Principles states (and is an agreement with all members):
- Keep the sorority's decision making and sacred ritual confidential
- Uphold the standards and regulations of the sorority
- Be honest, truthful, and trustworthy with the members
- Conduct sorority affairs with honor and ethics
- Safe-guard sorority property and funds
- In the face of adversity, behave in a manner that upholds the Tau Honor Principle
This agreement is made effective upon accepting membership and throughout their lifetime. The Tau Honor Principle presumes a member is honorable unless proven otherwise.
